Li pèmèt direksyon an konplete yon sipò finansye ICKL bay pou peye salè yo.

Interesting experiences | Using revenues from the Pen Lakay bakery

This third publication concerns the Pen Lakay bakery in Marigot. In it, we present the use of revenues generated by the company. Like the first two publications, this one is written in three (3) languages: Creole, French and English.

The revenues generated by the bakery contribute to providing services to the community through 3 mechanisms: 1- contribution to the salaries of the teaching and administrative staff of a community school, 2- strengthening the capital of a community bank, 3- support for certain logistical expenses linked to the operation of the network of associations that own the business.

The community school mainly caters for children from low-income families. The school fees paid by their parents are largely insufficient to pay the staff. Under these conditions, the bakery’s contribution is important to the running of the school. It enables the management to supplement financial support from the ICKL to pay salaries. The institute receives this support from Christian World Service (CWS) of New Zealand and the United Church of Canada.

As for the community bank, it offers credit at a monthly rate of 1% to people mostly engaged in small-scale informal trade. Loans are granted to groups of 5 people who are jointly responsible for repayment. This is a bank with very little infrastructure, and a lower level of formality than that of commercial banks. The community bank’s operations are based on relationships of trust established within the community.

The logistical expenses covered by the bakery’s income mainly concern transport, snacks and communication linked to the activities of the network of associations that own the business.

Menm jan ak premye piblikasyon an, dezyèm sa a ekri nan twa (3) lang : kreyòl, franse ak anglè.

Se yon manm youn nan òganizasyon patnè nou yo sou teren an k ap jere boulanje Pen Lakay chak jou. Moun sa a kwòdone travay yon ekip genyen 5 anplwaye. Yon komite jesyon la pou voye je chak semenn sou jan boulanje a ap fonksyone.

Antrepriz la gen ekipman ki ka bay bon sèvis : fou ki mache ak gaz pwopàn, moulen farin elektrik, dèlko, elatriye. Ekipman sa yo rann pwodiksyon an pi fasil epi li pèmèt boulanje a pwodui yon bon kantite pen.

Men depi pwodiksyon an ap bese a, kantite machann yo desann jiska 15. Se yo ki pote pen an pi pre popilasyon an. Gras ak boulanje a, machann ki nan rezo a gen yon revni ki estab.

Inspiring experiences | Bakery Pen Lakay : operation and commercialization

This second publication concerns the « Pen Lakay » bakery in Marigot. In it, we present the company’s operation and its commercialization. Like the first publication, this one is written in 3 languages: Creole, French and English.

Daily management of the Pen Lakay bakery is handled by a member of one of our partner organizations in the field. This person coordinates the work of a staff of 5 employees. The operation of the bakery is supervised on a weekly basis by a management committee.

The bakery is equipped with high-performance equipment, including a propane oven, an electric dough sheeter and a generator. This equipment facilitates the production process and enables economies of scale. This enables the company to offer better quality bread at lower cost.

The bread is marketed by a network of merchants. During the peak of production in 2017-2018, this network included 52 merchants. But since the production slowdown, the network has been reduced to around fifteen merchants. They bring the bread closer to the population. Thanks to the bakery, the network’s merchants have a stable income.

Eksperyans (1) | Boulanje Pen Lakay nan premye moman li yo

Ladan li, n ap gade kreyasyon antrepriz la ak premye moman li yo. Menm jan ak tout piblikasyon nan seri « Sou Teren » an, sila a ekri nan twa (3) lang : kreyòl, franse ak anglè.

Eksperyans boulanje “Pen Lakay” nan Marigo
Aprè li te fin kreye an 2016, boulanje a te atenn pi gwo volim pwodiksyon li pandan lane 2017-2018 la : pou pi piti 300 sak (50 kg) farin ble nan yon mwa nan yon komin ki genyen 74,700 moun, daprè chif Enstiti Ayisyen Estatistik ak Enfòmatik (IHSI an fransè) te bay nan lane 2015.
Akoz gwo kriz ki genyen nan peyi a, espesyalman wout nasyonal yo ki bloke, pwodiksyon boulanje a bese, paske li difisil pou pwodiktè yo jwenn matyè premyè yo (espesyalman farin ble a) epi pri yo moute tou. Sa ki fè, depi finisman lane 2018, volim pwodiksyon boulanje a desann nan 100 sak pou yon mwa.
Pou pwodiktè yo ka kontrekare konsekans kriz nou pale pi wo a, pou yo pa esklav farin ble a tou, yo anvizaje transfòme yon seri pwodui agrikòl, tankou pòmdetè ak lamveritab pou yo ka fè farin.
Boulanje Pen Lakay rete yon sous revni enpòtan ak yon mwayen pou simante bon relasyon travay nan mitan rezo asosyasyon patnè ICKL yo ki nan Marigo.
Experiences from the bakery Pen Lakay in Marigot
This first publication is about the Pen Lakay bakery in Marigot. In it, we look back at the creation of the company and its early days. Like all publications in the « Sou Teren » series, this one is written in three (3) languages: Creole, French and English.
After its creation in 2016, the bakery reached its peak in terms of production volume during the 2017-2018 year: an average of 300 bags (of 50 kg) of wheat flour per month in a commune whose population was estimated in 2015 at 74,700 inhabitants, according to data from the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI in French).
Due to the major crisis the country is experiencing, including the blocking of national roads, bakery production has decreased, as it is difficult for producers to source raw materials (mainly wheat flour) and prices are rising in parallel. As a result, since the end of 2018, bakery production volume has fallen to an average of 100 bags per month.
Faced with the consequences of the aforementioned crisis, also in order to eliminate their dependence on wheat flour, producers consider processing agricultural products such as potatoes and breadfruit to make flour.
The Pen Lakay bakery continues to be an important source of income and a lever of cohesion for ICKL’s network of partner associations in Marigot.
